Have you ever wondered about people's values? I don't mean to open up the proverbial Pandora's Box, but the subject is fascinating. What is the nature of values? Clearly, this thought is intriguing to organizational behaviorists and practitioners--including parents.
Biblically speaking, a human's life is in a constant state of value duality. What do I mean? In Genesis, God makes man in His own likeness. Clearly, goodness was the superior value. However, as sin entered, mankind became a dual human being, with the capacity of good and bad values. I Corinthian 2:14 reveals, "But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned."
Obviously, this reality places more critical need for spiritual formation. Spirituality relates to people's needs to discover their full identity as human beings. The event of 9/11 demonstrated that individuals have both the capacity for good and evil. Each of us possesses two characteristics, a natural component and spiritual component. The process of spiritual formation allows us to grow in a constructive manner. It encompasses emotional maturity, character development, and personal achievement; however, spiritual formation speaks to the need of discovery of identity and destiny.
